1. ÅéóáãùãÞ

 

Ï ðëçñïöïñßåò ðïõ äçìïóéåýïíôáé óôï Äéáäßêôõï åßíáé ðïëëÝò êáé äéÜóðáñ­ôåò óå ðïëëïýò åîõðçñåôçôÝò, ðïõ ï êáèÝíáò ôïõò ôéò ðáñïõóéÜæåé ìå ôï äé­êü ôïõ ôñüðï. ÖõóéêÜ ï êÜèå ÷ñÞóôçò ôïõ äéêôýïõ äåí åßíáé äõíáôüí íá ãíù­ñßæåé óå ðïéï óçìåßï ôïõ Äéáäéêôýïõ âñßóêåôáé ðëçñïöïñßá ó÷åôéêÞ ìå ôï èÝ­ìá ðïõ ôïí åíäéáöÝñåé.

«×ùñßò ôá åñãáëåßá êáé ôéò ìåèïäïëïãßåò ãéá ôç óõëëïãÞ, ôçí áîéïëüãçóç, ôç äéá÷åßñéóç êáé ôçí ðáñïõóßáóç ôùí ðëçñïöïñéþí, ç äõíáôüôçôá ôïõ Ðáãêüóìéïõ Éóôïý ùò êüóìïõ ãíþóçò, èá ìðïñïýóå íá åß÷å ÷áèåß [John December (john@december.com)]».

Ôï ðñüâëçìá áõôü Ý÷åé ðåñéïñéóôåß, ìå ôç ýðáñîç ôùí «ìç÷áíþí áíáæÞôç­óçò-search engines». Ïé ìç÷áíÝò áõôÝò - ìå ôçí ÷ñÞóç êáôÜëëçëïõ ëïãéóìéêïý - óõãêåíôñþíïõí ðåñéïäéêÜ êáé ïìáäïðïéïýí ôá ðåñéå÷üìåíá áðü üëïõò ó÷åäüí ôïõò åîõðçñåôçôÝò äçìïóßåõóçò êáé ðáñÝ÷ïõí óôï ÷ñÞóôç ôç äõíáôüôçôá íá áíáæçôÜ ôçí ðëç­ñïöïñßá ðïõ ôïí åíäéáöÝñåé ìå ôç ÷ñÞóç ëÝîåùí êëåéäéþí.

Óå áõôü ôï ìÜèçìá, ïé óðïõäáóôÝò èá åöáñìüóïõí óôï åñãáóôÞñéï - óå áðåõèåßáò óýíäåóç - ôéò ãíþóåéò ôïõò «áíáæÞôçóçò óôïí Ðáãêüóìéï Éóôü» óôéò ðçãÝò ðëçñïöïñéþí ðïõ ïé ßäéïé èá åíôïðßæïõí. Èá ìðïñïýí íá åðéêõñþíïõí ôçí áîéïðéóôßá êáé åðéêáéñüôçôá ôçò ðëçñïöïñßáò ðïõ åíôüðéóáí êáé ôåëéêÜ ìüíïé ôïõò - ìÝóù êïõßæ ãíþóåùí - èá áõôïáîéïëïãÞóïõí ôéò éêáíüôçôåò ôïõò.

3. Óêïðüò

Ïé óðïõäáóôÝò èá ðñÝðåé :

  1. Íá åîïéêåéùèïýí ìå ôçí ïñïëïãßá ôïõ Ðáãêüóìéïõ Éóôïý (ÐáñÜñôçìá (1))
  2. Íá ìðïñïýí íá åöáñìüóïõí êñéôÞñéá áîéïëüãçóçò óå ðñïêáèïñéóìÝíïõò Äéêôõáêïýò Ôüðïõò
  3. Íá äéåîÜãïõí ìéá áíáæÞôçóç óôïí Éóôü êáé íá äçìéïõñãïýí êáôáëüãïõò ìå ðëçñïöïñßåò ó÷åôéêÝò êáé áîéüðéóôåò ãéá ìéá èåìáôéêÞ åíüôçôá ðïõ èá ôïõò äïèåß
  4. Íá åîïéêåéùèïýí ìå ôéò äéÜöïñåò ôå÷íéêÝò áíáæÞôçóçò ãéá íá åíôïðßóïõí åêðáéäåõôéêÝò ðëçñïöïñßåò áðïôåëåóìáôéêÜ
  5. Íá åßíáé óå èÝóç íá åîçãÞóïõí, ôçí óðïõäáéüôçôá ôçò on-line åðéâåâáßùóçò ôùí ðëçñïöïñéþí
  6. Íá ìðïñïýí íá áíáãíùñßæïõí ôéò äéáóôñåâëùìÝíåò ðëçñïöïñßåò êáé ôéò ðéèáíÝò åëëåßøåéò-ðáñáëåßøåéò óôçí ðëçñïöïñßá êáé íá ôï åðéâåâáéþíïõí óå áðåõèåßáò óýíäåóç
  7. Íá åßíáé óå èÝóç íá åðéêõñþóïõí ÄéáäéêôõáêÝò ðçãÝò ðëçñïöïñßáò, âÜóç ôùí óôïé÷åßùí ðéóôïðïßçóçò ôïõò Þ ôïõ éäéïêôÞôç ôïõò, ôïõ ðåñéå÷ïìÝíïõ ôïõò êáé ôçò ôñÝ÷ïõóáò ÷ñÞóçò (êõêëïöïñßáò)
  8. Íá åßíáé óå èÝóç íá ðåñéãñÜøïõí ôç äïìÞ ôùí äéåõèýíóåùí URL êáé ôï ðþò ìÝóù ôçò äéåýèõíóçò URL êáé ìüíï, ìðïñåß íá ðñïóäéïñéóèåß ç áîéïðéóôßá ôçò ðëçñïöïñßáò

 

4. ÄéäáêôéêÞ ðñïóÝããéóç

Ëüãù ôçò éäéáéôåñüôçôáò ôïõ èÝìáôïò, ç ìÝèïäïò ôçò Ýììåóçò äéäáóêáëßáò áðïôåëåß ìïíüäñïìï óôçí äéäáêôéêÞ ôïõ ðñïóÝããéóç. Ï äéäÜóêùí èá èÝôåé åñùôÞóåéò ìå óôü÷ï ôçí áíÜðôõîç äéáëüãïõ ìå ôïõò óðïõäáóôÝò. Êáôåõèýíïíôáò-óõíôïíßæïíôáò êáôÜëëçëá ôçí óõæÞôçóç, ïé óðïõäáóôÝò èá ðñÝðåé íá óõíåéäçôïðïéÞóïõí ôçí ìåãÜëç áîßá ôïõ Ðáãêüóìéïõ Éóôïý ùò ðçãÞ ðëçñïöïñßáò. Óå êÜèå óôÜäéï ôïõ äéáëüãïõ, ï äéäÜóêùí èá ðñÝðåé íá Ý÷åé öñïíôßóåé íá õðÜñ÷ïõí ïé êáôÜëëçëåò åñãáóôçñéáêÝò äñáóôçñéüôçôåò, Ýôóé þóôå ôá üóá åêìáéåýïíôáé ìÝóù ôïõ äéáëüãïõ, ïé óðïõäáóôÝò íá ìðïñïýí íá ôá åðéâåâáéþíïõí ìå ôçí ÷ñÞóç ôïõ Äéáäéêôýïõ. Ïé äñáóôçñéüôçôåò èá ðñÝðåé íá åßíáé êëéìáêïýìåíçò äõóêïëßáò, Ýôóé þóôå îåêéíþíôáò ìå âáóéêÜ óôïé÷åßá ðïõ áöïñïýí ôçí «áíáæÞôçóç óôïí Éóôü», üðùò ôï ðïéá åßíáé ç óùóôÞ óýíôáîç ìéáò åñþôçóçò óå ìéá ìç÷áíÞ áíáæÞôçóçò, íá ðñï÷ùñÞóïõí óôï íá áíáêáëýøïõí ôéò óùóôÝò óôñáôçãéêÝò ðïõ ðñÝðåé íá áêïëïõèïýí ãéá íá Ý÷ïõí ôá åðéèõìçôÜ áðïôåëÝóìáôá. Ðñï÷ùñþíôáò, óå óõíäõáóìü äéáëüãïõ êáé äñáóôçñéïôÞôùí èá ðñÝðåé íá åíôïðßóïõí Üëëåò åíáëëáêôéêÝò ëýóåéò óôï ðñüâëçìá ôçò áíáæÞôçóçò ðëçñïöïñéþí, åêôüò ôùí (êëáóóéêþí) ìç÷áíþí áíáæÞôçóçò, üðùò åßíáé ïé Èåìáôéêïß êáôÜëïãïé (Subject Directories), ïé Ìåôá-Ìç÷áíÝò (Meta-Search-Engines), ïé ÂÜóåéò ÄåäïìÝíùí Åéäéêïý ÁíôéêåéìÝíïõ (Specialty DataBases), ïé Ðýëåò (Portals) êáé ôá åéäéêÜ ðñïãñÜììáôá áíáæÞôçóçò êáé plug-ins. ÔÝëïò ìÝóù áíôéðáñáâïëÞò ôùí áðïôåëåóìÜôùí áíáæÞôçóçò ôïõ êÜèå óðïõäáóôÞ ìå ôá áíôßóôïé÷á üëùí ôùí Üëëùí èá ðñÝðåé íá áíôéëçöèïýí ôçí óðïõäáéüôçôá ôçò áîéïðéóôßáò êáé ôéò åðéêáéñüôçôáò ôùí ðëçñïöïñéþí.

6. Óýíôïìç ÐåñéãñáöÞ

Ðñïóåããßæïíôáò ôùí Ðáãêüóìéï Éóôü ùò ðçãÞ ìÜèçóçò «ìéáò á÷áíïýò âéâëéïèÞêçò èåìÜôùí-óõããñáììÜôùí», èá äéåîÜãïõìå ôï ìÜèçìá ÷ùñßæïíôáò ôï óôá áêüëïõèá óôÜäéá :

Á) Ïé óðïõäáóôÝò èá ðñÝðåé áíôéëçöèïýí, ôçí ÷ñçóéìüôçôá ôïõ Ðáãêüóìéïõ Éóôïý ùò ðçãÞò ðëçñïöïñßáò

ÑùôÞóôå ôïõò óðïõäáóôÝò íá áíáëýóïõí ìéá äéåýèõíóç URL (÷ñçóéìïðïéÞóôå ôçí ëßóôá óôï ôÝëïò ôïõ ìáèÞìáôïò óôçí ïðïßá åìðåñéÝ÷ïíôáé äéåõèýíóåéò Äéáäéêôõáêþí ôüðùí

META - SEARCH   ENGINES

 

Meta-search engines (also know as multi-threaded engines) search several major engines at once. Meta-search engines do not crawl the Web or maintain a database of web pages. Instead, they act as a middle agent, passing on the query to the major engines and then returning the results. Because the major search engines often produce very different results, meta-search engines provide a quick way to determine which engines are retrieving the best match for your information need.

Because search engines vary in ability to interpret complex searches, meta-search engines work best with simple searches.

SUBJECT   DIRECTORIES

 

A subject directory is a catalog of sites collected and organized by humans. Subject directories are often called subject "trees" because they start with a few main categories and then branch out into subcategories, topics, and subtopics. To find the homepage for the Atlanta Braves at Yahoo!, for example, select "Recreation & Sports" at the top level, "Sports" at the next level, "Baseball" at the third level, "Major League Baseball" at the fourth level, "Teams" at the fifth level, then finally "Atlanta Braves."

Because humans organize the websites in subject directories, you can often find a good starting point if your topic is included. Directories are also useful for finding information on a topic when you don't have a precise idea of what you need. Many large directories include a keyword search option which usually eliminates the need to work through numerous levels of topics and subtopics.

Because directories cover only a small fraction of the pages available on the Web, they are most effective for finding general information on popular or scholarly subjects. If you are looking for something specific, use a search engine.

Yahoo! is the largest subject directory on the Internet and is an excellent site for finding topics that appeal to the general public.

If you can't find it at Yahoo!, try Looksmart - another great directory for locating popular sites.

The Open Directory lists scholarly and popular websites.

At About.com, you'll find a directory with a twist. Each topic area has an assigned "Guide" responsible for writing articles and organizing links on the topic.

SEARCH   ENGINES

 

Search engines are very different from subject directories. While humans organize and catalog subject directories, search engines rely on computer programs called spiders or robots to crawl the Web and log the words on each page. With a search engine, keywords related to a topic are typed into a search "box." The search engine scans its database and returns a file with links to websites containing the word or words specified. Because these databases are very large, search engines often return thousands of results. Without search strategies or techniques, finding what you need can be like finding a needle in a haystack.

To use search engines effectively, it is essential to apply techniques that narrow results and push the most relevant pages to the top of the results list. Below are a number of strategies for boosting search engine performance. When a "practice" link appears, click on the link to practice the technique with AltaVista's search engine.

 

IDENTIFY  KEYWORDS

When conducting a search, break down the topic into key concepts. For example, to find information on what the FCC has said about the wireless communications industry, the keywords might be:

BOOLEAN  AND

Connecting search terms with AND tells the search engine to retrieve web pages containing ALL the keywords.

FCC   and   wireless   and   communication

The search engine will not return pages with just the word FCC. Neither will it return pages with the word FCC and the word wireless. The search engine will only return pages where the words FCC, wireless, and communication all appear somewhere on the page. Thus, AND helps to narrow your search results as it limits results to pages where all the keywords appear.

BOOLEAN  OR

Linking search terms with OR tells the search engine to retrieve web pages containing ANY and ALL keywords.

(FCC  or  wireless  or  communication)

When OR is used, the search engine returns pages with a single keyword, several keywords, and all keywords. Thus, OR expands your search results. Use OR when you have common synonyms for a keyword. Surround OR statements with parentheses for best results. To narrow results as much as possible, combine OR statements with AND statements.

For example, the following search statement locates information on purchasing a used car:

(car  or  automobile  or  vehicle)  and  (buy  or  purchase)  and  used

AND NOT tells the search engine to retrieve web pages containing one keyword but not the other.

The above example instructs the search engine to return web pages about dolphins but not web pages about the "Miami Dolphins" football team. Use AND NOT when you have a keyword that has multiple meanings. The need for AND NOT often becomes apparent after you perform an initial search. If your search results contain irrelevant results (e.g., Saturn the car rather than Saturn the planet), consider using AND NOT to filter out the undesired websites.

IMPLIED  BOOLEAN:  PLUS  &  MINUS

In many search engines, the plus and minus symbols can be used as alternatives to full Boolean AND and AND NOT. The plus sign (+) is the equivalent of AND, and the minus sign (-) is the equivalent of AND NOT. There is no space between the plus or minus sign and the keyword.

NOTE: AltaVista's Simple Search requires the use of plus and minus rather than AND, OR, and AND NOT.

Surrounding a group of words with double quotes tells the search engine to only retrieve documents in which those words appear side-by-side. Phrase searching is a powerful search technique for significantly narrowing your search results, and it should be used as often as possible.

For best results, combine phrase searching with implied Boolean (+/-) or full Boolean (AND, OR, and AND NOT) logic.

The above example tells the search engine to retrieve pages where the words heart disease appear side-by-side and the word cause appears somewhere else on the page.

NOTE ON IMPLIED BOOLEAN LOGIC (+/-): When a phrase search is combined with additional keywords using implied Boolean logic (+/-), you must put a plus or minus sign before the phrase as well as the other keywords. PLURAL FORMS, CAPITAL LETTERS, AND ALTERNATE SPELLINGS

Most search engines interpret lower case letters as either upper or lower case. Thus, if you want both upper and lower case occurrences returned, type your keywords in all lower case letters. However, if you want to limit your results to initial capital letters (e.g., "George Washington") or all upper case letters, type your keywords that way.

Like capitalization, most search engines interpret singular keywords as singular or plural. If you want plural forms only, make your keywords plural.

A few search engines support truncation or wildcard features that allow variations in spelling or word forms. The asterisk (*) symbol tells the search engine to return alternate spellings for a word at the point that the asterisk appears. For example, capital* returns web pages with capital, capitals, capitalize, and capitalization.

TITLE  SEARCH

Field searching is one of the most effective techniques for narrowing results and getting the most relevant websites listed at the top of the results page. A web page is composed of a number of fields, such as title, domain, host, URL, and link. Searching effectiveness increases as you combine field searches with phrase searches and Boolean logic. For example, if you wanted to find information about George Washington and his wife Martha, you could try the following search:

 +title:"George Washington"  +President  +Martha

title:"George Washington"  and  President  and  Martha

The above TITLE SEARCH example instructs the search engine to return web pages where the phrase George Washington appears in the title and the words President and Martha appear somewhere on the page. Like plus and minus, there is no space between the colon (:) and the keyword.

DOMAIN  SEARCH

In addition to the title search, other helpful field searching strategies include the domain search, the host search, the link search, and the URL search. The DOMAIN SEARCH allows you to limit results to certain domains such as websites from the United Kingdom (.uk), educational institutions (.edu), or government sites (.gov).

The current U.S. domains are the following:

                                    .com   =   a commercial business

Most websites originating outside the U.S. have a country domain indicating the country of origin. For a list of all country domains, visit this site.

HOST  SEARCH

The HOST SEARCH comes in handy when you need to find something located at a large site that does not have an internal search engine. With this search technique, you can search all the pages at a website (contained in the engine's database) for keywords or phrases of interest.

NOTE: Because the major search engines do not always log an entire website, use an internal search engine, if the website has one, for best results.

LINK SEARCH

Use the LINK SEARCH when you want to know what websites are linked to a particular site of interest. Teaching Zack to Think

As more and more students access the Internet for research, it's essential that they learn how to validate online information. The Internet is a place where you can find "proof" of essentially any belief system that you can imagine. And, for too many students, "If it's on the Internet, it must be true."

The following story is also true.

Fourteen year old Zack was asked to research a unique topic for his history class. Zack knew a bit about using reliable sources on the Internet, so when he found some information on a Web page on the Northwestern University site he felt sure that he had found a reliable source of information for his project. The topic was unique too—Holocaust Revisionism—Zack had never heard of that before, so he decided to write his history paper on "How the Holocaust Never Happened."

Zack found his "information" from a Web page at javascript:HandleLink('cpe_2496_0','CPNEWWIN:child^toolbar=1,location=1,directory=0,status=1,menubar=1,scrollbars=1,resizable=1@http://pubweb.acns.nwu.edu/~abutz/index.html');, titled "Home Web Page of Arthur R. Butz." On his low-key home page, Butz explained that he wrote "A short introduction to the study of Holocaust revisionism" and that his material was intended for "advanced students of Holocaust revisionism." At the top of the page Butz identified himself as "Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Northwestern University."

His article began with the following:

I see three principal reasons for the widespread but erroneous belief in the legend of millions of Jews killed by the Germans during World War II: 

US and British troops found horrible piles of corpses in the west German camps they captured in 1945 ..., there are no longer large communities of Jews in Poland, and historians generally support the legend. 

During both world wars Germany was forced to fight typhus, carried by lice ... that is why all accounts of entry into the German concentration camps speak of shaving of hair and showering and other delousing procedures, such as treatment of quarters with the pesticide Zyklon. That was also the main reason for a high death rate in the camps, and the crematoria ... 

Look at the above situation from the perspective of a 14-year-old, untrained to think critically about information. He's researching the Holocaust, and suddenly finds this Web page. His teacher told him to find a unique topic, and this certainly fit the bill. The page is simple and clear. It's written in a calm, logical tone. The page is clearly intended for experts in its field. Best of all is the source: Northwestern University! And a professor to boot! Perfect.

Or is it? Outline some of the methods Zack could have used to critically evaluate the information that he found on Professor Butz's Web page. What clues may have indicated that this Web page wasn't as reliable a source of information as it initially appeared to be?
